HISTORY OF PAEDIATRICS IN INDIA

Its very interesting and fascinating to know that the science of treating diseases of children and neonates dates back to year 800 b.c.!.

I.e. 2800 years before, there were doctors present in India who were studying diseases in children and neonates and may had been practicing the medicines.

Two names of dignitaries in this regards are Susruta , the junior and Jivaka , who should be given the credit of  pioneering the cause.

There must be many unsung unknown doctors from that period to modern age period contributing a great lot to the healthcare in children since then.

Dr George Cohelho is considered as the father of modern-day pediatrics, that is, children health science, in India. He contributed to this cause in 1928, as a dean of medical college in Pune back in 1928.

Then after 20 long years and in independent India, the first pediatric department started in Nair hospital, Mumbai and Patna ..

Dr K.C.Chowdhary and Dr Cohello was pioneers of forming associations of all pediatricians in India and in 1963, the Indian academy of pediatrics is established. The iap is now the leading academy of 23000 plus members of pediatricians all over from India and I am the proud member of it.
